Costa Rica has a high perch on any list of the world’s top destinations for a wellness getaway. It has to do with the local features. Beaches, mountains, and jungle forests promote healthy, outdoor activities, and living so close to wildlife puts us in touch with our animal nature. It also has to do with the national attitude, the celebrated idea of Pura Vida or Pure Life.

The truth is, there are many reasons why life near the equator tends to be ideal for body and soul.

Equator Equals Equilibrium
The body loves homeostasis in all things, from daily temperature – which is reliably unvaried in Costa Rica – to diet, habits, and schedule. Here, it’s easy to re-set your body clock with a total unplug and a daily schedule in sync with the sun.

Food is Better in the Blue Zone
Costa Rica is in one of the five Blue Zone regions: areas with the highest concentration of centenarians in the world. These long lives are often attributed to Blue Zone diets, with such core Costa Rican components as beans, squash, corn, papayas, yams, bananas and peach palms.

Happy Begets Happy
Costa Rica tops the Happy Planet Index, with high scores in Life Expectancy (79.1) and Wellbeing (7.3/10). These high scores are attributed to a host of national conventions and attitudes including: Costa Rica has no standing army – it was abolished in 1949; the culture promotes solid familial and neighborhood bonds; the country has invested more money in health and education as a proportion of Gross National Product than many Western countries; Costa Rica has proudly made environmental protection a core concern and has become a world leader. Currently, the country generates more than 90% of its energy from renewable sources.
