Planning and directions

Planning Ahead

If you will be driving in Costa Rica

SUGAR-BEACH.comWe recommend renting 4x4 vehicles during and just after the rainy season (May-December), as dirt roads can be somewhat rough, with possible inundations in some sections. Avoid leaving belongings unattended in your rental car; if you must, make sure your car is parked in your line of sight where possible, or in a well-lit, well-trafficked area, preferably with a security guard on hand.

What to Pack

The weather ranges from pleasantly warm to hot, year-round; however we do recommend you bring a pair of light, long pants and a light rain coat during the rainy season, or if you plan to travel inland, to keep you dry and protected from mosquitoes and other biting insects. Those who want to go hiking in national parks should bring water resistant hiking shoes/boots.

You should also bring:

  • Small flashlight
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Extra batteries for cameras and other electronics (specialized batteries can be hard to find in Guancaste)
  • A photocopy of your passport photo page, as well as the page with the entrance stamp into Costa Rica, to carry with you at all times (your passport can stay in the room safe). All members of the family must have passport copies.
