Sustainibility
Sustainability is a simple and intuitive concept, but in practice sustainability means different things to different people. Located on the beach in the tropical dry forest, we hold our responsibility to protect the surrounding natural environment and resources to require our primary action. The hotel is also committed to maintaining a system of support inherent in all of our relationships with Potrero, the neighboring community where 90% of our employees live.
Environment
The hotel uses a natural system of bio gardens and filtration for wastewater treatment, water restoration and watershed protection. Our subsurface constructed wetlands are low in energy consumption, effective at reducing organic loading and contamination and provide a source of treated, recycled water for subsurface irrigation.
In order to reduce waste and create organic fertilizer for our gardens, our staff composts 90% of all kitchen waste.
The hotel participates in local reforestation projects. Our guests hosting weddings or events at Hotel Sugar Beach also get involved by offering a tree for each guest who has traveled to Costa Rica. Small trees indigenous to the dry tropical forest are purchased from a local nursery and planted as a group in an appropriate area.
Community
Hotel Sugar Beach donates 1% of your room revenue to community projects.
› EDUCATION & SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
Funds are needed to support the Escuela Puerto Potrero - the school needs both classrooms and materials. Funds will also be used for scholarship donations and educational activities sponsored by the hotel.
› SALÓN COMUNAL DE POTRERO & LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
Donations will be made to the Salón communal de Potrero to help maintain the center and sponsor events; to CEPIA – an organization assisting families in need (www.asociacioncepia.org); and to CARITAS – an organization assisting children undergoing cancer treatment. (www.fundacioncaritasorg.tk)
› CONSERVATION ACTION AND PROTECTED AREAS • CHOROTEGA PROJECT
The regional environmental objective is to foster biodiversity conservation and preserve important forest ecosystems through conservation easements on privately-owned lands outside of protected areas in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor in Costa Rica. The project will strengthen offices within the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), as well as local and regional non-governmental organizations, responsible for the execution, promotion, supervision, and monitoring of the forest conservation program.
